California Grown Dragonfruit Cuttings - Dark Star Variety
π§βπΎ Notes from Farmers Leo and Lucky
Dark Star is a collector favorite, and once you see the color you'll understand why. It's another Paul Thompson variety, in the same family as Purple Haze, Physical Graffiti, and Sugar Dragon, and it's one of the sweetest things we grow.
π± Growing it
It's a fast grower that tends to fruit in its first or second year, and it does well both in the ground and in containers, so it works even if you're a little tight on space. It likes warm conditions and rewards you quickly once it's established.
π The fruit
Cut one open and the flesh is a deep magenta purple that almost doesn't look real, and that color comes from a heavy dose of antioxidants. The flavor sits somewhere between grape, lychee, and kiwi, sweet and juicy, and it comes in around 19 to 21 brix, which puts it near the top for sweetness. Fruit runs medium to large, up to about a pound and a half.
π Taste
Deeply sweet with grape and lychee up front and a soft kiwi finish. One of the highest-sugar varieties we grow.
